CANSAT competition is this Saturday
For the second year in a row Virginia Tech is hosting the American Astronautical Society CANSAT competition at Kentland Farm June 10, 2023. This competition brings 400 students from colleges and universities across the globe to Blacksburg to compete in a multi-phase, complex engineering challenge to design a simulated payload.
This competition is a true international event with teams from Thailand, Australia, England and Argentina to name just a few. The event consists of formal design reviews, technical presentations, a rocket launch of the payloads and an awards ceremony. These events will be held on the Virginia Tech campus and the rocket launch will be held at Kentland Farm. For the competition the payload must separate from the rocket at apogee of 700 meters (2300 feet). At 500 meters the CANSAT will deploy a probe that must open a heat shield to slow descent to 20 meters per second or less. At 200 meters, the probe shall deploy a parachute to slow the descent rate to 5 meters per second. Upon landing the probe must raise a flag. A video camera will be onboard the CANSAT to record the events. More information can be found at https://www.cansatcompetition.com/
Note that this event is not open to the public due to very limited parking
NRVR will be conducting the launch with CANSAT payload being launched starting at 1:00 pm. The morning of the launch will be filled with reviews and safety checks for the 40 teams. NRVR is looking for a few well constructed rockets, with a perfect launch and recovery history demonstrated on previous flights. Here are some important details:
1. this in not an NRVR club launch
2. this is not the place or time for certification launches or first time flights
3. there will be very limited parking. carpool if you can
4. for demonstration flights
* Rockets must have a proven flight history, nothing extreme or new
* Maximum apogee is 3,000 feet
* demo flights will have to pass a very thorough RSO and pre-flight check
* all participants in demo flights will fill out a pre-flight data form (attached)
* demonstration flights may be canceled if the wind direction and speed are unfavorable
* the launch director (Bob) has the final say on what rockets will be flown during the demonstration time, approximately from 10am until noon
If you are an NRVR club member and you really want to come to the launch I want to say that is OK.
* There will be close to 500 people at Kentland.
* Parking will be very limited.
* I may need people to help with parking or other miscellaneous tasks
* I will be very busy.

* We're having a couple hundred students and support staff from all over the world descend on Kentland Farms on Saturday from 8am - 5pm
